Story
A historic and heroic journey to raise funds for the Australian Opal Centre!
Hi! I'm raising money for the Australian Opal Centre by participating in The Walk, a 686 kilometre journey on foot between the legendary opal mining towns of White Cliffs and Lightning Ridge in outback NSW, in June and July 2012. Please donate now to support me!
I'm walking 96km from Tilpa to Louth and it's gonna HURT - don't think I've walked more than 100 metres in a day yet this year, and now I'm tackling 96 kilometres in 3 days.
UPDATE: I'm back! It hurt like hell but it was worth it: the Walk and the Walk team are BRILLIANT.
I made the entire 30km the first day, then had a blowout (of the super-blister kind) and did 14km the second day, then 15km the third. Still, that's nearly one and a half marathons all up....not bad for someone who previously in 2012 hadn't walked any further than from Countrywide Tyres to the AOC. Incredible to think of the men making this journey in the middle of summer, during drought, more than a century ago, without support crew, tents and the like....
Big respect to Gunnel and Jurgen, who are walking the entire 686km; to Shovel, who's walking much of the distance each day of the Walk; and to the wonderful Doug and Cookie in support.

Lightning Ridge Opal And Fossil Centre Inc
The Australian Opal Centre is an extraordinary national project being developed at Lightning Ridge in outback NSW, to showcase a world class collection of Australian opal, opalised fossils and vibrant opal field heritage. It will foster education, training, scientific research, tourism, industry and community cultural development, and revitalise regional economies across three states of Australia. The Australian Opal Centre is managed by Lightning Ridge Opal and Fossil Centre Inc, a not-for-profit organisation.
Isolated and disadvantaged communities have contributed over $850,000 in cash and donated items worth more than $2 million to the Centre’s magnificent national collection, acquired a breathtaking site and commissioned Glenn Murcutt and Wendy Lewin – two of Australia’s greatest architects – to design an energy-efficient building set to become a 21st century architectural icon.
This brilliant project is a gift to the world from the people of Australia’s opal fields. Now, they need your help to realise their vision. Give what you can, and we’ll create a priceless treasure for this and future generations.
